Camp Quinebarge Recreational Hall History

Dudley Laufman, at the age of 93, boasts a rich history of mingling with folk-music luminaries such as Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger. Recognized for his outstanding contributions to contra and barn dances, he has received accolades from the state of New Hampshire and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Among Laufman’s most cherished moments is the dedication of the recreation hall at Camp Quinebarge on Lake Kanasatka in Moultonborough in his honor. Since the 1970s, he has been a fixture at the camp, calling barn dances twice each summer. Recently, on Aug. 4, Quinebarge counselors-in-training presented him with a specially crafted wooden sign to adorn the building now named Dudley Hall.

Recalling a noteworthy encounter at a festival, Laufman shared an amusing incident involving Bob Dylan. After finishing his set, Dylan headed for the festival’s green room, trailed by eager fans. However, a significant number of them redirected their attention to Laufman, turning the moment into an impromptu dance.

Laufman fondly reminisces about the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, where he spent time with iconic figures like Seeger, Theo Bickel, Donovan, and Peter, Paul and Mary. He briefly crossed paths with Dylan during a dinner at the festival, where his ensemble, adorned in suits and ties, was well-received.

Following his festival experiences, Laufman embarked on a successful career as a dance caller and authored eight books of poetry. Describing himself as a storyteller, he humorously noted that he shares his stories “at the dump or at cocktail parties,” even if he doesn’t get paid for them.

While not as active as before, Laufman continues to call dances and play music. Crediting his longevity to good genes and water from his Shaker-dug well, he remains hopeful that his 45 years of calling dances at Camp Quinebarge have inspired someone to carry on the tradition when he is no longer able to do so.
