Meet Eric Carlson-Executive Director at Camp Quinebarge

Eric was a camper and counselor at Quinebarge in the 1980’s, rising from the youngest boys cabin (Mohawk) through to counselor. He worked in the wood shop and on the waterfront as a swim and boating instructor. As an adult, Eric founded and runs an environmental foundation seeking climate change solutions. Some say Eric is trying to recreate Quinebarge as it was in 1983, and those people are not incorrect. However, the reality is Quinebarge has a similar look and feel, and the same values and goals, as it always has. Quinebarge has always been focused on kindness, friendship and fun and Eric is pleased to be able to continue this mission through his stewardship of Quinebarge.

“There is a special, innate quality to Quinebarge,” Eric says. “Maybe it’s that Quinebarge sits under a forest canopy, or that we are on a quiet lake. It could be the camp fire fires, the silly names for things like camp fires, the singing, Monkeytown, or the plaques representing the generations of Quinebargers, or the throwback nature of camp to a simpler time when we were more present with those around us. The acceptance of others. Whatever it is, there is a feeling at Quinebarge that remains with campers years and decades later, a specialness, a beauty, the sound and smell of camp the morning after a rain, a longing to return. It’s childhood.”

Eric grew up in Cohasset, Mass. and lives in East Aurora, NY with Lesley, his wife, and their two daughters. Quinebarge is a family affair, with all four at camp each summer.
